Community Presbyterian Church
A Message from Pastor Belden
We are affiliated with the Presbyterian
Church (USA) and are a community church located in Mountainside, New
Jersey, 25 miles west of New York City.
We are a fellowship of believers
who come together to:
worship God
study and learn about God and ourselves
serve God through serving each other, serving our community and joining
with other Christians to serve the world
Our worship includes Scripture readings,
prayers, a children's chat, a sermon and plenty of music.
Our study includes Sunday School
for all ages, Confirmation Class, Youth Fellowship programs, Bible Study,
our Women's Association and our Men's Group.
Our service includes numerous opportunities
for mission work both in our immediate community and in reaching out to
minister to needs across the globe. Ministry to our own members ranges
from taking flowers to those who are hospitalized to Christmas Caroling
at the homes of shut in members to providing opportunities for fellowship
and recreation for members to enjoy each other's company. We hold each
other in times of sorrow and help in times of need.
We truly are a community church in
that a major focus of our ministry is to our surrounding community. Our
church building is in almost constant use. We boast a very fine Nursery
School for 2 1/2, 3 and 4 year old children. The local Boy Scout Pack
is sponsored by us and meets in our building. Three separate Alcoholics
Anonymous groups meet here as well as the local Senior Citizen group. Our
Assembly Room serves as a polling place for government elections and a
local drama group meets here throughout the year.
We truly are a community church in
that our members are people who care for the world. We range from housewives
to horse trainers, from artists to zoo keepers in our professions. What
we have in common is that we are people who are willing to reach out. We
are not only active in the church but we also serve by supporting the local
library, the rescue squad and the fire department, the scouts and the little
league. Many of our members have served in almost all the elected positions
in local government and school board.
I hope you have a sense of the Community
Presbyterian Church as a vital, exciting place. I also hope you have a
sense of us as warm, loving fellowship of people trying our best to be
faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

We welcome Erika Beer-Gerhard as our Parish Associate.
We are delighted to have a “formal” relationship with Erika once again and we look forward to working with her.
Erika will be taking a role in worship leadership as her schedule allows and will be working with the Women’s Association.
She will be available as a “back-up” for pastoral emergencies. The Book of Order describes a parish associate as a
minister who is a member-at-large in the presbytery but wishes to maintain a relationship with a particular church
in keeping with ordination to the ministry of Word and Sacrament.
Jonathan Scanlon is our current seminary assistant. He is in his second
year at Princeton Theological Seminary in the Master's of Divinity Program.
Jonathan is from Los Gatos, California, south of San Francisco. He graduated
from the University of California, Davis in 2002 with a B.A. in Sociology.
This summer he will go before the Presbytery of San Jose in hopes of
becoming a candidate for the Ministry of Word and Sacrament, his next
step toward ordination. Next year Jonathan will begin a Master's of Social
Work program at Rutgers University. As if taking classes in New Brunswick
and Princeton isn't enough to keep him occupied, Jonathan hopes to be able
to return in the fall to help with the youth groups next year. Click here to send an email to Jonathan

Joseph Hill is from Arkansas and earned a Bachelor of Music degree from
Furman University in Greenville, SC in vocal performance. At Furman, Joseph participated in three choral ensembles,
serving as Vice-President and President of the Furman Singers, section leader of the Chamber Choir, and student
director of the Bell Tower boys - Furman's premiere men's a cappella ensemble. Joseph also served as the organist/accompanist
for the Daniel Memorial Chapel on Furman's beautiful campus, where he presided over the newly installed $1.7 million
C.B. Fisk pipe organ, opus 121; a magnificent instrument given to the university as a generous gift by the late
Tom and Edna Hartness. The organ consists of 42 voices, 54 ranks, 2,929 pipes encased in African mahogany, a tracker
mechanical action, 3 manuals, and the pedal board. While at Furman, Joseph was also an active member of the Pi Kappa Phi
fraternity. He is currently attending Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University where he is studying voice
with renowned tenor Frederick Urrey, as he works to earn a Master's degree. Joseph is thrilled to be part of the
Community Presbyterian Churh.
