Meet Boy Scout Troop 177

Boy Scout Troop 177 was reinstated in 1998 after a nine-year absence. The Community Presbyterian Church of Mountainside (CPC) is our sponsor organization. In 2004 the Troop roster included 31 Scouts between the ages of 11 and 17 and 5 adults. We currently have 2 Eagle Scouts and 3 Scouts well on their way to becoming Eagle Scouts. We expect 14 new Scouts to join our Troop in 2005.

Troop 177 is run by the Troop Committee which consists of 4 to 6 Senior Scouts and 4 Adult Leaders. The Senior Scouts who are on the committee change approximately every 6 months. The Adult Committee Members are:

    Troop 177 Community Service Projects

Thanksgiving Food Drive - The Scouts help Cub Scout Pack 177 collect food for the Community Presbyterian Church which donates the food to needy families in Elizabeth.

St. John’s Catholic Church, Newark Soup Kitchen - The Scouts donate their time one Saturday each month to preparing and serving meals for the homeless in Newark. After meals, the Scouts help clean up and organize donated food. This is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the city of Newark and one of the last remaining soup kitchens in the area.

The Troop 177 Triangle - Troop Scouts mow, rake, plant and maintain the “Triangle” located at the northeast corner of New Providence Road and Route 22 through the New Jersey State “Adopt A Spot” program. We also donated the bench at the bus stop.

Memorial Day Observance - Each year our Troop places American Flags on the graves of Veterans at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. The flags are donated by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

American Flag Retirement - Our Troop placed a bin at Borough Hall where damaged or faded flags can be placed. The flags are retired during a ceremony which complies with U.S. Federal Code Title 36. This ceremony is performed during our camping trips.

Brighton Gardens Retirement Home - Two to three times a year we perform a Flag Ceremony and spend time with the guests. We also built a Horse Shoe playing area for the residents.
