Mountainside
Rescue Squad
PROVIDING
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES SINCE 1938
FAQs
Q:
Who can join?
A: Applicants need to be at least sixteen years of age and live
within five miles of mountainside.
Q:
I work in Mountainside, but live farther away than five miles.
Can I join?
A: People
who work, but do not live in town are also asked to apply for
membership in the Rescue Squad's special membership program. This
arrangement allows Mountainside businesses to contribute a member's
time in as small an amount as an hour a week.
Q:
How do I join?
A: An application is filled, out, two references are obtained
and a medical form must be completed by your doctor (reasonable
charges are reimbursed). In addition, an informal interview is
held with the squad's officers prior to membership.
Q:
What training do I need?
A: To join, no training is necessary! In order to provide care,
at least a CPR and first aid course must be completed. Within
two years the EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) course must be
completed. The squad provides for continuing education and reimburses
the cost of your training.
Q:
How much time is required?
A: Members are asked to pull twelve hours a week. This can be
done in one twelve hour shift or broken down into as many segments
as you wish. A business meeting is held the first Wednesday and
a drill on the third Wednesday of the month. As outlined later,
squad duty need not be spent at the building. All members are
given radio pagers which will give you the location and nature
of a squad call.
Q:
What do I do while on duty?
A: Pretty much whatever you like! You may even respond from home.
If you plan to stay at the building, there is a comfortable day
room with cable TV, a training/meeting area with computer, a kitchen,
soda machine, two bedrooms (one with a desk and work area), lockers
& shower facilities in each bedroom. In short, you can tailor
what you do to what you like to do. Since RESCUE SQUAD DUTY AVERAGES
ONLY 1 CALL A SHIFT, members are free to work, study, shop and
complete errands close to home all while on call.
Q:
I don't think I can handle it..besides the sight of blood makes
me faint!
A: While what may come to mind is blood, in actuality most calls
involve emergencies such as strokes, heart attacks and difficulty
breathing. Initially, you will always work with at least two EMTS
who will help you with questions you may have and even full fledged
"crew-chiefs" of the squad have a partner to help. In
addition working with the squad are Mobile Intensive Care Paramedics,
who will respond automatically on calls which are considered life-threatening.
Q:
Aside from the obvious rewards of helping others, what makes the
Rescue Squad a worthwhile activity?
A: Rescue Squad members learn valuable skills in handling not
only medical emergencies but in responding to and managing all
types of crisis. Being able to come to the aid of family, friends,
and the community with new-found confidence is a reward many people
find quite special. In addition, members with health care interests
find EMT training and rescue squad work invaluable as a foundation
for further study. On a resume, or a college application, being
a member (or officer) of a squad is another way to set you apart
form the crowd.
Q:
Who is the Rescue Squad?
A: EMS (Emergency Medical Service) in Mountainside is staffed
by a cross-section of our community. Teachers, home-makers, retirees,
students, nurses, paramedics, computer programmers, social workers,
corporate officers. In short, people just like you! And being
on the squad is fun. It is a place to meet friends and help others
at the same time. The Mountainside Rescue Squad takes pride in
rendering progressive, quality emergency medical care in a relaxed
and enjoyable atmosphere. All THAT IS MISSING IS YOU!
